Where Are They Now?

Navin travelled to Nepal in 2016 where he spent 6 weeks. He is now a Registrar in Emergency Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary. We caught up with Navin in early 2023 to reflect on his overseas medical elective.

We spoke to qualified Midwife Nada Majid about her elective in Ghana, and how it prepared her for the culturally diverse wards of Leeds.

"The new perspectives I got while I was in Ghana are what helped shape my current practise more than anything else."

"We taught some of the dads how to do back massages to help with the pain. You could sense that they were terrified to even be near the women because it’s not a cultural norm."

"After my overseas placement, I was more clued up on the conditions I was studying because I had seen the conditions first hand with my own eyes in Vietnam."

"The hospitals were incredibly busy, packed with patients and relatives. It was not uncommon to see a bed with up to four patients."

"I was brought up in Nigeria. But going to Ghana was a totally different experience!"
